EUSKADITX

The Founding Story

EuskadiTX, The Basque Club of Texas, is an ever-growing community open to all persons, people, and families interested in The historic & modern Basque Culture. The Founder of EuskadiTX is Charles Huriega III. Charles, Charlie, was born in Kendalia, Texas February 8th 1993 to a strong Basque family. The sense of strong being that the Huriega family had maintained its Basque blood and culture in geographic Texas for over 300 years. Basques had sailed and settled much of The New World, especially "Texas," under the Spanish Crown. Although, as centuries passed, a large majority left Basque heritage, culture, & identity behind & forgotten. This left the Huriega family pretty culturally isolated. Enjoying The Texas Folklife Festival was an event Charlie looked forward to every Summer. From the Belgian Waffles to the Hula dancers, it was a fun filled party where you were immersed with cultures of the world. Without fail, Charlie would keep an eye open for a Basque booth every year. Also without fail, Charlie would leave extremely happy, yet unsatisfied as his culture, the Basque culture which had arguably been in Texas the longest, was nowhere to be found. This always left a passion for Basque heritage and identity with Charlie. Then, in 2017, Charlie married Brianna Michelle Bustillo, a Canary Island descendant. As the Bustillo family was extremely involved with the Spanish and Canary Islander organizations, Brianna implored Charlie to simply, stop complaining, be happy, and start a Basque Club on his own. After reaching out to Ms. Joann Andera, EuskadiTX, The Basque Club of Texas, officially joined The Texas Folklife Festival (2018). While only four years old and battling massive setbacks due to Covid-19, EuskadiTX is now here as you see it, thanks to these persons, and a number of families who have jumped on board right from the beginning. Please enjoy our events, read our history, join our Club, and remember your heritage!
